A Guide to Chalk Paint |
|
Chalk Paint is a beginner friendly paint that is fool proof and can make any paint job look professional. Chalk Paint can fit any style, whether it be modern, rustic, bohemian, eclectic, or farmhouse! It's perfect for those of you who love to DIY or revamp your furniture. This water based paint consists of a fine powder such as calcium carbonate or plaster that is then mixed with water. Chalk Paint is available in nearly every colour, and if you can't find the exact colour you are looking for then you can also mix it yourself to create your perfect shade. The colour component itself comes from adding commercial acrylic paint. Its chalky, matte finish is what gives it its name: Chalk Paint!

History of Chalk Paint
Chalk Paint was invented in 1990 by British artist Annie Sloan. Sloan created Chalk Paint after wanting a paint that required less prep work and was easier to work with, but was unable to find an existing product. To this day, Sloan continues to adjust and refine her formula. This environmentally safe paint is made for sustainable restoration. Many public work engineers use this paint to mark sidewalks when doing construction.

How to Use Chalk Paint |
|
Chalk Paint has a very simple one step application process. It does not require any prior sanding or special brushes. All that is needed is a clean surface to apply the paint to, otherwise the paint will crack or won't stick. A simple roller brush or bristle brush will get the job done however there are specially made round brushes for Chalk Paint, though they are not required.
This decorative furniture paint requires no prep work and can be applied to any clean, dry surface. The Chalk Paint is quick, easy, and reliable to use. When applying Chalk Paint, always make sure to add two thin coats in order to get good coverage. The application process is also determined by the type of brush you use as well. These types of brushes can be a flat brush, a roller brush, or a spray gun! There are many finishes available when it comes to Chalk Paint. Depending on how you apply it, you can have a velvet finish, a textured-aged finish, a smooth finish, or even a wash. You can get these finishes by adding water to the paint, or leaving the lid off to thicken it out. After two hours of drying; to protect your finish, avoid flaking, and create a long lasting durable surface, apply a wax or lacquer to seal it all together. It is important to note that DRY paint means the paint is dry to the touch as the solvents have evaporated from the paint, however CURED paint is when the paint is 100% dry and has reached its maximum hardness. Dry paint usually happens within 1-2 hours whereas Cured paint happens after at least 24 hours.
Luckily, Chalk Paint does not require much aftercare. After about 24 hours the paint will have cured, making it more durable and it should last about 1-5 years if stored properly. In order to have your Chalk Paint projects last longer, try adding a Polyurethane sealer, which is not necessary but recommended. If you are looking for a shiny finish on your Chalk Paint apply a wax or finish as Chalk Paint alone will dry matte similar to that of a chalkboard. Since Chalk Paint is water based, it can wash off with water and soap, so it is important to secure your paint job by adding a wax or sealer. Unfortunately outdoor weather conditions might damage your paint job, so it is especially important to protect these surfaces!
