The Henry is internationally recognized for bold and challenging exhibitions, and for pushing the boundaries of contemporary art and culture Through individual experiences with art, Henry inspires visitors to upend their expectations and discover surprising connections. The Henry was founded as Washington State's first art museum by Seattle entrepreneur Horace C. Henry, who in 1926 donated their collection of 152 paintings along with $100,000 to the University of Washington for the construction of the Henry Art Gallery. Seventy years later, in 1997, the museum completed a major expansion, to increase exhibitions and public programs.

The Henry has had transformative and lasting relationships with numerous international artists including Uta Barth, Ann Hamilton, Gary Hill, Maya Lin, Kiki Smith, and James Turrell, as well as significant and emerging artists from the Pacific Northwest.

  GREG KUCERA
Greg Kucera founded his Gallery in 1983 with high hopes and ambitions to develop a creative space for diverse groups of artists. The only mention of it in the press was a three line paragraph at the end of an arts column in The Seattle Times, which began an incredible journey of Greg and his colleagues.

The Gallery began with a modest group show of artists which included established NW artists such as Alden Mason, Gene Gentry McMahon, Karin Helmich and John F. Koenig. A number of younger artists were quickly added including Mark Calderon, Michael Ehle, Jody Isaacson, Ross Palmer Beecher, and Ed Wicklander.

For the first decade the gallery exhibitions rotated between emerging regional artists shown alongside emerging artists from New York or elsewhere such as Kiki Smith, Darren Waterston or Cheryl Laemmle. We also created a series of exhibitions devoted to internationally known artists like Susan Rothenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Mimmo Paladino and David Hockney. It was my intention to create a context for printmaking alongside other forms of expression, such as drawings and paintings, by these artists.

Fast forward, the gallery began a series of politically themed exhibitions in 1989 with "Taboo," a look at the momentarily incendiary artworks by Andres Serrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sally Mann and others. This was followed over the next few years by "God & Country" and "This Is My Body" and "SEX" and "Bad Politics," all of which examined other aspects of contemporary political art. Throughout decades of history Greg Kucera Gallery has gained countless amounts of recognition from its brave pieces and internationally known artists and continues to impress the art world with its contemporary vision.

Greg Kucera shares, "Now, as the gallery passes into middle age, I hope that it continues with the same promise with which it began. With eyes that remain fresh and a sensibility that regards contemporary art as the moving target it always is."

Kristen Anderson founded Roq La Rue in 1998, hoping to create a space for the rising "Lowbrow" art scene, containing of provocative to the world pieces including prison art, tiki art, works of underground cartoonists and any other subcultural influenced artworks that would be considered inappropriate to the society.

Throughout the time, Roq La Rue started to be less transgressive and shifted to magical realism and pop-surrealism, exhibiting the best artists in the genre and discovering new talents. This led to gaining not only an international roster of artists and collectors, but a reputation for being highly discerning.

Kristen Andersonwrote the first survey of the burgeoning underground pop art scene in 2014 called "Pop Surrealism", which effectively renamed the art movement previously exclusively known as Low Brow. She also was the editor-at-large and writer at Hi Fructose magazine from 2007-2014 and has written numerous forwards for artist monographs including Mark Ryden, Martin Wittfooth, Lisa Petrucci, Travis Louie, Marion Peck, Camille Rose Garcia, and Femke Hiemstra.
