About the Foundry Gallery
The Foundry Gallery was established in 1971 by four students of well-known Washington, D.C. painter Gene Davis. Sharing space in the old Duvall Foundry building in Georgetown, the group grew to include more artists. The gallery remained in the foundry for many years. It moved to its present location in the Dupont Circle Historic District in 2004.
Since its beginning, the Foundry Gallery has encouraged and promoted Washington, D.C. area artists. As an artist-run organization, it is free to exhibit a wider range of work than commercial galleries, and to allow artists greater control over the exhibition and sale of their work. The Foundry Gallery offers an alternative gallery experience to artists and art lovers alike.
A Member Cooperative
Members are primarily local artists who pool their resources to support the gallery and each other. The member artists are a diverse group representing different ages, backgrounds, artistic styles and media. Members pay dues to support the organization, and are required to participate in staffing the gallery and governing its operation. Together they also share the expenses of maintaining the gallery, publicizing shows, funding educational opportunities for artists and the public, and handling administrative functions.
The strength of the Foundry Gallery is its membership. All member artists share a commitment to quality and professionalism in their art, and to the promotion of art in Washington. Artists join for many reasons. Some are seeking alternatives to the commercial art scene. Some are in the early stages of their career and want to expand their experience. All benefit from both the exposure of their art and the knowledge they gain of the gallery business. Artists who become full members make a two-year commitment to the gallery and renew membership biannually. Members attend monthly meetings and share their time and talents to maintain the health of the organization. Associate memberships are also available for those who want to show their work on an ongoing basis in a professional setting but do not want to be featured as a solo artist. |
