The Milavec Hakimi Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in New York, NY. After all the institutions of education and work experience had run their toll on the brains of the founding duo of Nikki Milavec and Karen Hakimi, they decided to take the plunge and form a gallery. Over the last three years they have searched high and low, making loads of artists studio visits, putting together multiple temporary exhibitions all to collectively bring together art that they themselves would display in their our own homes, offices and places they go. The intention is to promote emerging contemporary art while highlighting artists they feel are exceptional in a sea of complacency. Located at the ground floor of the newly constructed 51 Cooper Square it beats at the center of a crossroads of cultures and viewpoints in the heart of Manhattan.
Our Applied Philosophy: Before describing our approach let us clarify our sentiments about art, and why it has become our mission to introduce to the world the artwork of our generations visionary talents. We see art as a tangible record of human achievement. Art is the visual record of human history through any given persons emotions, and varying perspectives. It ignites thought, evokes emotion, promotes debate, and can inspire yet cause us to self-reflect. It presents itself in different forms and different mediums, while still eliciting a deep recognition from within us. Therefore, any time art is taken away from us a piece of our understanding of the world is jeopardized. It is not just decoration; rather it is social commentary, a snapshot of the artists views. Moreover, art has served as a true constant throughout history because its message has never veered, even though its interpretations have, and will forever evolve. It remains something unique to humanity- a cave painting may both serve as a record of a successful hunt and yet signify the growing creativity that lay before us. It is our link to peoples past and an amusing connection to living artist telling it like it is, and that alone is worth a pretty penny...
Milavec Hakimi Gallery is often asked what kind of art do we show. If a vague mood is upon the tongue, which can frequently be the case, "contemporary" automatically comes out and is usually greeted with someones crunched unimpressed eyebrows waiting for more. So the second impulse to go ahead and lighten up comes out with "young, emerging and awesome art!?!"... Empty words... Fine... The arm as been twisted! We like bold, technical figurative works with themes of nostalgic reflection or truths unrecognized and a general bucking-of-the-system type narrative. We like science fiction, ya know, stuff thats not always everyones reality like space, robots and cowboys. We like smart subtleties, witty warped things, stuff that just looks plain cool and causes your mouth to uncontrollably smirk. Innovative, visionary, 100% going to freaking be famous one day art. We like bright colors, quirky and fun. However somber and mute can sometimes pull us in and we really like it when it has a twist that we secretly hope remains concealed until criticized so we can point it out and see the wheels reverse in ones head! Yes, Beauty and the Walt Disney Beast is about to be quoted "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere"... Art is one of humanities only everlasting ways of evoking emotional and causing uncontrolled examining thoughts to filtrate all of our brainwashed heads without mainly causing any physical harm. We are selling one-off products that define the buyer, imagine our nerves! Our hope is that after our endless searching, humble pie eating and ego halting presentations, that maybe in the end the world will be a tad bit prettier, happier and nicer because of our meager efforts. |
