JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) JPEG, short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a widely used image compression format designed for storing digital photographs in a compressed file format. It employs lossy compression techniques to reduce file size while retaining a relatively high level of image quality. JPEG compression works by analyzing the image and discarding redundant or less important image data that the human eye is less likely to perceive.
This allows for significant reductions in file size compared to uncompressed image formats, making JPEG ideal for storing and sharing digital images over the internet, via email, or on digital devices with limited storage capacity. However, repeated editing and saving of JPEG images can lead to a loss of image quality due to compression artifacts such as blockiness, blurring, and color distortion. Despite its limitations, JPEG remains one of the most widely supported and versatile image formats used in digital photography. |
Jpeg or jpg A digital format used for images. Jpegs are considered "lossy" file types, which means that when the image data is compressed (for easier storage and transfer), some detail may be lost.
Though jpegs are perfectly acceptable for printing and can produce a quality printed image, they are not as highly recommended as TIFF files. |
